James Rhoads, 83, passed away on February 28, 2020.
He retired over 15 years ago after a 30-plus year career in the door and hardware industry, beginning in the 1970s as Vice President of Manufacturing for Reading Door Closer.
After the acquisition of Reading by DORMA (now dormakaba) Rhoads became Director of Operations, responsible for engineering and manufacturing at the Reamstown, PA facility and eventually the Steeleville, IL facility of American Device after the acquisition by DORMA.
He attended numerous DHI conventions and was well known to many contract hardware distributors, but was more actively involved in the technical product committees of the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) for decades.
After retirement from DORMA he worked until his passing in his son-in-law’s business, TAB Industries, and served many mid-Atlantic hardware distributors as the East Coast distribution for Cal-Royal hardware and DKS steel doors and frames.
Rhoads loved our industry and its people and had no vision of ever retiring completely from it. He will be dearly missed by his wife Nancy, his three children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, as well as numerous industry and non-industry friends alike.
