If all goes well, a new $89 million hospital building in Nantucket will be completed by the end of the year, representing what officials say is the only new hospital currently being built in the state of Massachusetts.
The cost for the new Nantucket Cottage Hospital includes demolition work and moving certain buildings, according to the Cape Cod Times. What hasn't been moved is the original hospital, which is still operating in its current location.
The new hospital is being built directly next to it, and the current one will be removed once the new version is up and running. The old, 65,000 square-foot building was built in 1957.
Nantucket's new hospital will have 14 inpatient beds and outpatient services such as primary care physician offices, a radiology department, infusion, a laboratory, a rehabilitation gym and dialysis and chemotherapy centers. Nantucket Cottage Hospital will also have a pharmacy, emergency department and facilities for surgery and labor and delivery.
It'll be sturdy, too: The hurricane-proof building will be able to withstand winds exceeding 150 miles per hour.
